February 1-3: MercCon

From February 1st-3rd, Fandom will be hosting a convention that's a little ... unconventional. (Forgive the pun?)

It's the 17th Annual Mercenaries, Assassins, and Bounty Hunters Convention and Trade Show - more commonly known as MercCon.

What Is It?

MercCon is a weekend-long get-together of mercenaries, bounty hunters, assassins, covert ops squads, guns-for-hire, and armed thugs. There will be workshops, discussion panels, networking schmoozing, a job board, and booze. Lots of booze. It's been held in classy establishments, it's been held in seedy underground joints, but it's never been held in a place like Fandom.

Discussion Panels

Sign up your character to participate in a friendly debate about one of these topics. Be ready to field questions from the audience. (If too many sign up, RNG will determine who gets booted. If too few, that panel might be cancelled.)

Proposed Topics:

  • Leaving the Biz: When the Going Gets Gone

  • Risk vs. Reward: Dead Men Can't Cash In

  • When to Bail if a Job Goes South

  • Ethics and You: When Booze Won't Help

  • Finding a Weapon that's Right for You

Workshops

Characters can give a speech or demonstration on some topic or ability that's related to succeeding at merc work. This has, in the past, ranged from hands-on workshops on how to make an impromptu silencer out of household items, to practical discussions on the fastest way to get blood spatters out of your wife's car, to amusing anecdotes about that one time you almost got caught and how it ensured you'll never take a job with a Bothan again.

Job Board

This will be an open post for comments. Leave your business card with notes about what jobs you will or won't do, a general idea as to pay scale, and so on. Contact others about their listings. Post jobs you're opening up for bids. Solicit co-workers.

Who Can Attend?

1) Current players can app guest characters for the weekend (here, using the form on the following post). Guest characters are subject to mod approval, and please note they've got to fit into one of the categories that would attend. It can be a loose fit, but it has to make sense IC for the person to know where MercCon is and get the invite.

(General rule of thumb: if the character beats, steals, kills, kidnaps, and spies as part of their plan for world domination, not so much. If it's for a paycheck, come on down!)

Guest characters can host workshops, participate in panels, post to the job board, and shoot the breeze. Guest characters can also go anywhere within town for the weekend (i.e., drop by Luke's for lunch, shop at the Monthly Market, feed the ducks in the park) except school grounds.

2) Characters living on-island who fit one of the categories (hi, Deadpool!) are also welcome to participate - please comment here (with the mini-form) to indicate you'll be there. On-island mercs/assassins/and-so-on can do all of the stuff that guest characters can - host workshops, participate in panels, etc., while getting the benefits of being locals.

3) Characters on-island who don't fit any of the categories are free to hang out for anything they'd like - stop in for the panels, attend the workshops, browse the job board (or post listings, if you're dying to put a hit on someone), drink some of the lovely booze. They just can't give workshops or speak on guest panels, as they don't have that real-world experience that's so important nowadays.

Very Important Note

MercCon has a very strict "don't shit where you eat" policy. Anyone attending must be off-duty for the weekend. Yes, that person you've been hunting for three months is here. No, you cannot cap him. Attendees are expected to behave themselves, as the last thing a group of assassins, mercenaries, and guns-for-hire really want is for the police to have a reason to come sniffing around. Breaking this rule is grounds for removal from the con, officially. Unofficially, the last time someone tried, their body was left gift-wrapped on the police chief's front steps. In other words, don't do it.

Questions? Comments? Pie?

Those go here. Unless you've got a question which you'd like to be screened, for whatever reason, in which case, ask it over here instead.

EDITED TO ADD: I totally forgot about this earlier, my bad. The deadline for guest character apps is January 29th.

I totally feel that one of the attendees should be a mermaid who misread the con's name much like I just did

When's the deadline for sign up? Sorry if I'm overlooking it.
