As I mentioned in her info post - Joan is pretty much a walking plot device.
God frequently appears to her and gives her random tasks/assignments. She never knows what the point is but they always do have some sort of impact.
For example - in "Drive, He Said" - God tells Joan not to reschedule her driver's license test for the fifth time. He keeps showing up and insisting that she go and take the exam. She does and she gets her license. Later, God shows up and tells her to take her brother for a drive. They end up stumbling across their father, who had been car-jacked and wrecked his car on purpose to escape. If they hadn't found him, he likely would have died from his injuries.
So if you ever need a catalyst for anything for your character, I'd be happy to have Joan receive an order from God to do *something* and help that along :D
