School Assemblies: The 2006 Holiday Pageant

Hey, folks! I have the promised future assembly post here for you. But first, a quick note: if you submitted an application for this Friday's assembly, you should have received an e-mail regarding it by now. If you haven't, let me know via e-mail and I'll correct that oversight.

Anyway, the future. On December 8th, 2005, Fandom witnessed a crack event that has gone down as one of the most awesome things ever. The 2005 Fandom High Holiday Pageant as directed by Principal Jack Bristow is one of those scenes that is fun to read and was even more fun to participate in.

December 8th, 2006, is a Friday. Guess what we're doing for an assembly that day! If you guessed "The 2006 Fandom High Holiday Pageant as directed by Dean The Tick," you get a shiny gold star. Because I'm insane, I'm going to try to go bigger than last year's Christmas celebration. It is my intention to get everyone who wants a role and every December holiday we can find into the pageant. I have some very specific ideas at the moment, some general ideas, and some ideas that have yet to be formed but we can work on that.

But to do this right, we have to start organizing it now. IG, the planning (which will be largely handwavey) will kick into gear on Monday, November 20, since I'll be on vacation from this Saturday until then.

What we're looking for right now is the following:

-Teachers who want to incorporate their classes into the pageant somehow (please have an idea up front). Please provide a link to your class roster in your comment.

-Students and/or teachers who would like to individually volunteer (or be volunteered either as punishment or through faculty "encouragement," however you would like to work that). No ideas for this are necessary up front, just volunteer and we'll work something out. This would be in addition to any classes participating. If you're involved via a class, I will contact you and make sure you're good to participate individually as well, so you can sign up even if you don't yet know if any teachers will have plans for you.

-Any additional holidays that can be used, either real or from an existing fandom in the game. I've compiled a decent list of real December holidays below plus Festivus, but if you can contribute any others, it would be appreciated. All holidays will be celebrated somehow during the pageant.

This is a big, ambitious event, and with some coordination it should run pretty smoothly. This post will be open for sign-ups through November 20. Only people who sign up by then will be allowed to participate in the pageant itself.

December Holidays:

Wednesday 6: St. Nicholas Day
Friday 8: Bodhi Day
Wednesday 13: Santa Lucia's Day
Saturday 16: Hanukkah
Wednesday 20: Winter Solstice
Thursday 21: St. Thomas' Day
Saturday 23: Festivus
Monday 25: Christmas
Tuesday 26: Boxing Day, Kwanzaa

I have not yet embarrassed Hermione onstage. I think this problem should be remedied.

*volunteers*

I'd love to volunteer the Prophecy class, too, if I can come up with a good idea. Think you'd have need of an entire chorus of Wise Men with flashy turbans and fake Jamacian accents?

Oh hell. December 8th? But I'm moving on December 8th.

*cries*

Well, anything I can do to help out beforehand, I'm up for. :(

I think it's a requirement for me to sign Sam up for anything that involves public embarrassment. :D

*doesn't bother changing logins*

Okay, I've got the acting teacher here. I'd love to have her make the Basic Acting students do something for it, though I'm not sure what. But definitely count her into the craziness.

But I think Pete and Nadia will probably just prefer to watch. And mock. And laugh. Assuming they don't get dragged in through a class.

A holiday sketch of some sort would be reasonable, I think. I have no clue what off the top of my head, but we can figure out something.

Ooo, wait, back that up . . . .

Nadia has a song to make up for missing the recital last time. Hmmm. Perhaps she can be tossed in and made to sing?

I'm thinking "The Christians and the Pagans" by Dar Williams.

Perhaps even while the Basic Acting students are made to improvise a pantomime of the events behind her . . . complete with actual flaming pumpkin pies. . . .

[identity profile] connernotconnor.livejournal.com 2006-11-08 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
. . .

OH MY GOD I LOVE YOU.

If you can't get the acting students to do it, I totally volunteer Conner to play Amber's aunt. *snicker*

Re: Individuals!

[personal profile] nadiathesaint 2006-11-08 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
OH MY GOD I WAS DRINKING DR PEPPER WHEN I READ THAT NOTIFICATION

And the mental image of Conner fleeing to an imaginary kitchen to put out real flaming pies caused me to have to have Dr. Pepper going up my nose.

Re: Individuals!

[identity profile] connernotconnor.livejournal.com 2006-11-08 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I am totally unrepentant. Excuse me while I cue up that song now.

The prospect of flaming pies is enough justification.
nadiathesaint: (yay!)

Re: Individuals!

[personal profile] nadiathesaint 2006-11-08 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Woot! Now we just need to see if we can get the acting kids in on it. . . .

Greg, naturally, is at your disposal, because this is something he'd love.

And if you can figure out a way to get my anarchist in there, I will love you forever. Because seriously. V. In a pageant.

Or just JD.

Seely and Zack are both available, although I think Zack could probably cause more chaos be more help backstage than on.

Hogswatch, of course, from Discworld -- 32 of December!

Re: Holidays!

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2006-11-08 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and Midwinter Eve, from the Heralds of Valdemar books. At a wild guess, I'd say it's roughly analogous to Christmas Eve.

Re: Holidays!

[identity profile] anextimeagent.livejournal.com 2006-11-08 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh poot. I'd forgotten that Agnes was gone. *sads*

And I really wanted to see the wee little Hogswatch piggies!

Re: Holidays!

[identity profile] peter--parker.livejournal.com 2006-11-08 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, there are a few Discworld fans on the admin/mod team. Hogswatch will not be forgotten next month even if it doesn't make it into the pageant. :)

St Stephen's Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Stephen's_Day).

C'mon, can you pass up a holiday that encourages hunting birds and then begging funds for a funeral? ;)

Re: Holidays!

[personal profile] notajar 2006-11-08 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Couple different Winter Solstice things, which fall on the same basic date but would have different traditions and sources - Dong Zhi which might apply to River and Zoe as well as any students with Chinese ancestry, and Yule, which is specifically Germanic/pagan. (So some of the witches might celebrate. Possibly Door as well, since it's 'forgotten' enough to be something that's still celebrated in London Below.)

[identity profile] 1ordinarygirl.livejournal.com 2006-11-08 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
There's Advent Calendar and the four Sundays before Christmas. The Advent calendar starts on the first and ends on the 24th, and as far as I'm concerned consists of getting one piece of candy a day. For the four Sundays (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advent) you light one candle for each Sunday and recite a verse until you have all four candles lit.

New years eve (http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2064.html) is a really important holiday in japan...
so is the 23rd! because it's the emperors birthday. Thus. holiday. :D

This is really just an added something, but among little girls? The competition on who's going to be Lucia is brutal. *nods* Tears are cried. *shifty* Not that I ever did, or anything.
