School Assemblies: The 2006 Holiday Pageant

Hey, folks! I have the promised future assembly post here for you. But first, a quick note: if you submitted an application for this Friday's assembly, you should have received an e-mail regarding it by now. If you haven't, let me know via e-mail and I'll correct that oversight.

Anyway, the future. On December 8th, 2005, Fandom witnessed a crack event that has gone down as one of the most awesome things ever. The 2005 Fandom High Holiday Pageant as directed by Principal Jack Bristow is one of those scenes that is fun to read and was even more fun to participate in.

December 8th, 2006, is a Friday. Guess what we're doing for an assembly that day! If you guessed "The 2006 Fandom High Holiday Pageant as directed by Dean The Tick," you get a shiny gold star. Because I'm insane, I'm going to try to go bigger than last year's Christmas celebration. It is my intention to get everyone who wants a role and every December holiday we can find into the pageant. I have some very specific ideas at the moment, some general ideas, and some ideas that have yet to be formed but we can work on that.

But to do this right, we have to start organizing it now. IG, the planning (which will be largely handwavey) will kick into gear on Monday, November 20, since I'll be on vacation from this Saturday until then.

What we're looking for right now is the following:

-Teachers who want to incorporate their classes into the pageant somehow (please have an idea up front). Please provide a link to your class roster in your comment.

-Students and/or teachers who would like to individually volunteer (or be volunteered either as punishment or through faculty "encouragement," however you would like to work that). No ideas for this are necessary up front, just volunteer and we'll work something out. This would be in addition to any classes participating. If you're involved via a class, I will contact you and make sure you're good to participate individually as well, so you can sign up even if you don't yet know if any teachers will have plans for you.

-Any additional holidays that can be used, either real or from an existing fandom in the game. I've compiled a decent list of real December holidays below plus Festivus, but if you can contribute any others, it would be appreciated. All holidays will be celebrated somehow during the pageant.

This is a big, ambitious event, and with some coordination it should run pretty smoothly. This post will be open for sign-ups through November 20. Only people who sign up by then will be allowed to participate in the pageant itself.

Hogswatch, of course, from Discworld -- 32 of December!

Oh, and Midwinter Eve, from the Heralds of Valdemar books. At a wild guess, I'd say it's roughly analogous to Christmas Eve.

Oh poot. I'd forgotten that Agnes was gone. *sads*

And I really wanted to see the wee little Hogswatch piggies!

Don't worry, there are a few Discworld fans on the admin/mod team. Hogswatch will not be forgotten next month even if it doesn't make it into the pageant. :)

St Stephen's Day (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Stephen's_Day).

C'mon, can you pass up a holiday that encourages hunting birds and then begging funds for a funeral? ;)

Couple different Winter Solstice things, which fall on the same basic date but would have different traditions and sources - Dong Zhi which might apply to River and Zoe as well as any students with Chinese ancestry, and Yule, which is specifically Germanic/pagan. (So some of the witches might celebrate. Possibly Door as well, since it's 'forgotten' enough to be something that's still celebrated in London Below.)

There's Advent Calendar and the four Sundays before Christmas. The Advent calendar starts on the first and ends on the 24th, and as far as I'm concerned consists of getting one piece of candy a day. For the four Sundays (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advent) you light one candle for each Sunday and recite a verse until you have all four candles lit.

This is really just an added something, but among little girls? The competition on who's going to be Lucia is brutal. *nods* Tears are cried. *shifty* Not that I ever did, or anything.
