Random Event: Career Day!

Mark this in your calendars, all: on Saturday, March 5, Fandom will be having Career Day! That means that there'll be all sorts of "career"-ish workshops taught throughout the day on the island. Students will handwavily take a career placement test and be assigned to a workshop based on their results. But there's a twist! In typical island shenanigans, there'll be a paperwork mixup, causing all students to be placed in workshops that are most definitely not right for them. So all the workshop instructors will be filled with earnest and bewildered teachers forced to rep their "careers" (more on that in a second) to a bunch of confused and grouchy kids with no interest in those fields. Fun!

So, what does this mean?

Who can teach a workshop?
Just about anyone who is not a student! Current teachers and townies are welcome, as are alumni and expatriates. In addition, NPC guest stars are welcome as well. They can be parents/friends/etc. of current students if you'd like, or just random characters you've always wanted to play. As long as this character is legally an adult with something resembling a career, go nuts!

What can the workshops be about?
Jobs! Normal jobs (second-grade teacher, firefighter...) are welcome, as are bizarre jobs (rogue demon hunter, couch potato...). It doesn't have to be something that your character is paid to do as long as it's the way he or she spends most of their time.

How do sign-ups work?
Anyone who would like to teach a workshop can do that in the post that's just about to go up. Sign-ups for instructors will close on Wednesday, February 23rd. After that, a definitive list of workshops will be finalized, and you'll be able to sign up your student for one (ETA: some) of the workshops. Remember to make it a workshop that your character wouldn't want to take, because awkwardness is fun!

Does my student have to take a workshop?
Nope! Participating in this is totally optional.

Any other questions? Comments? Concerns? Random images? Go for it!

Everyone who signs up has to do a workshop?

Will there be a section for people with, like booths people can visit so as to not have so many presentations? That's how I always pictured a career fair, at least.

Oooh! Does that mean we can have a mingling type deal, either before or after the presentations? So kids can wander around swiping t-shirts / pens with logos on them and peeking at all the different booths and getting to chat with peeps without needing to end up in 27 different workshops?

(... will there be swag? I am picturing swag. Swaaaaaaaaaaag.)

Also, I owe you an e-mail! I am a total flake zomg. o.o

Aw, just the one? There's no chance that my boys can be sneaky and try to weasel in to see workshops that they weren't signed up for, is there? Partly because I want to play with ALL THE SHINY YAY, and partly because... man, it would suck to be the person who spends an hour working on a workshop spiel, only to have, like, one person show up because everyone else is over there at the other cool workshop instead.

I agree. To be honest, the idea of only being able to see one workshop, cracktastic or not, is enough to make me not want to bother with it at all...

More options and more interaction with these sorts of things is always better. :) Being able to visit as many/whichever/however many booths is what makes cons and fairs like this awesome.

Then again, this is coming from someone who has to actually make charts to whittle down what classes her kids are taking, so choosing one sounds like a near impossibility for me, at least.

Hey, no problem. I just thought of all the pretty shinies that are sure to come in for this and yeaaaaah. Consider me as hoarding as my character here.
