Hello again, folks! Dropping a reminder here for those who might have forgotten (or missed the announcement entirely because I got excited and announced it while people were still on their way home from SDCC) that this weekend, Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th, will be Steampunk Weekend!

So crimp your cravats, polish your goggles, fling together some icons and feel free to swing by the brainstorming post if you'd like to play along!

Steampunk Weekend!

Remember Soap Opera Weekend? Remember Noir Weekend? Well, pull out your parasols, crimp your cravats and grease up your gears, because on the weekend of August 4/5th, and with thanks to Zed for the kick in the butt to make this happen, the island will be gearing itself up for its very first Steampunk Weekend!

Just like all themed AU weekend events in the past, if you opt in to having your character change, you'll find yourself playing with those steampunk tropes that make the genre so appealing. Everything electrical on the island will be replaced by clockwork, steam-powered, or geothermal alternatives, and the aesthetic will pull a major switch from Fandom's 'come as you were' aesthetic to Victorian and Edwardian sensibilities with a clockwork twist; everything from full flouncy dresses and dapper tailcoats and cravats to jodhpurs and jungle-explorer chic. Streetlamps will become gaslamps, the seaport will become the location of one of series of metal towers around the island where enterprising captains can dock their airships. If you're uncertain about what tropes to lean into for this event, consider the works of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. There's a pretty impressive list of examples of steampunk in popular culture over here, as well as a good write-up on what makes the genre in the first place, and for further ideas of what to do with your characters or the surroundings they live within, consider poking at the tabs of the steampunk index here!

As with all other crazy themed weekends, the clockwork sky is basically the limit. Embrace your character's darker inclinations toward mad science and experiment with power and chemicals to create a man... or a monster. Attack your neighbours from above as fearsome sky pirates sailing aboard grand airships. Catch a mechanical, spider-legged rickshaw across town in order to attend a ball thrown by the island's social elite, only to run afoul of a raging automaton. What becomes of our fair island will be largely up to whatever steampunky shenanigans you want to bring to the table, and if you want to have your character lean into cattle punk or gaslamp fantasy, could anybody possibly complain? No matter where you take this, as always, don't worry; everything that happens on the weekend will revert back to normal again on Monday morning!

It'll be structured very much the same way Soap Opera Weekend is, with OCD neatly tucked into this very post for you to all noodle about your characters' backstories, and what's going to change about the island you all know and love.

Brainstorming and question threads are all posted within for your convenience!

Noir Weekend!

We all know and love Soap Opera Weekend, so we thought we would riff on that idea, but with a twist!

Yes, on the weekend of July 12-13th, Fandom Island (and those hanging around on Ingvar, if the stolp bug menace hasn't vacated the dorms by then) will be experiencing its very first Noir Weekend!

What does Noir Weekend consist of? If you opt in to playing along, you'll get to poke at copious noir tropes, black and white/period icons, shenanigans with private dicks and speakeasies (as dirty as you want to interpret that) and plenty of dangerous dames, skirts, birds, and molls. Prohibition is going strong, which means that the bars can only legally be serving soft drinks and sarsaparilla, though there may be rumors of secret rooms where something a little harder can be bought--for a price. Monologuing runs rampant. And if there aren't antics involving tommyguns before the end of the weekend, someone is doing something wrong somewhere. But no worries, any and all damage caused will revert back to normal again on Monday morning!

Picture this! (all characters mentioned being used w/out permission just for illustrative and brainstorming purposes) Please listen to this while reading to get into the mood:

Fandom Island. A seedier hive of scum and villainy you won't find this side of NYC. The air is always hazy with fog and cigarette smoke and the streets run with rainwater, illegal booze, and sometimes even blood. At the aptly-named Devil's Nest, a man known to associates and enemies alike only as 'the Viking' runs girls, games, and gin. When it comes to having dirty hands, no one's are much dirtier than his boy, Lips, who does brisk business in records and "violin cases," if you know what we mean. Most of the cops are on the take and the ones that ain't have a hard time keeping their backs free of lead. Not that they ain't got problems of their own. The Baltimore Bay Butcher's killed seven NPC people and counting and even though times are tough, Satriale's shop has always got plenty of pork. Every heart's got a secret, every business has got a backdoor, and every one has to pay the piper in the end.

This is...Fandom Noir.

It'll be structured very much the same way Soap Opera Weekend is, with OCD neatly tucked into this very post for you to all noodle about your characters' backstories, and what's becoming of the bits of the island you all know and love.

Brainstorming and question threads are all neatly posted within for your convenience!

Workshop idea!:
[identity profile] wesleynotponcy.livejournal.com
Mark this in your calendars, all: on Saturday, March 5, Fandom will be having Career Day! That means that there'll be all sorts of "career"-ish workshops taught throughout the day on the island. Students will handwavily take a career placement test and be assigned to a workshop based on their results. But there's a twist! In typical island shenanigans, there'll be a paperwork mixup, causing all students to be placed in workshops that are most definitely not right for them. So all the workshop instructors will be filled with earnest and bewildered teachers forced to rep their "careers" (more on that in a second) to a bunch of confused and grouchy kids with no interest in those fields. Fun!

More excitement behind the cut! )

Pi Day Invasion!

As you may have noticed if you're enough of a math nerd, tomorrow is 3/14, a nationally recognized holiday known as Pi Day. In celebration of this glorious event, those tiny little running gags known as pi-rats will be invading the town once again! They arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr tiny and dressed like pirates and recite the numbers of pi and can be modded all over town all day (but especially at 1:59 PM).

The rumors that they may appear in actual pies are currently ONLY rumors that I made up right now, but I want it to happen. PROVE THE RUMORS TRUE, PEOPLE.

This Friday Gunn will be gathering a crew of fellow schoolmates to go into the basement of the dorms and deal with this Gremlin menace once and for all.

Of course as soon as they get into the basement and try to attack these gremlins they will get ambushed like ambushing things.

Cue hilarity.

I'll make an OCD post on Friday morning and all are welcome to join in on getting bitten for trying to start something with our favorite crazy-inducing-residents.

Questions? Comments? Concerns? Let's make it work, people!

What: FOOD. Ahem. A benefit or Taste of Fandom or whatever you want to call it, with various Fandom businesses signing up to help raise funds for repairs and renovations to the Boards playhouse by selling foooooood.

When: Saturday, November 14.

Where: the Park, all day. A post will go up early, which businesses can sign into their threads.

Who: You! Hopefully. Please sign up below if your PC business or restaurant would like to donate proceeds from food and have a booth at the Benefit, or if your character wants a booth to help show off your culinary skills, and needs to be contacted in some way by Sophie. She'll be putting up posters Monday night, with her contact info, so anyone else who wants to contact her IC can. If you want to participate but don't have time for an IC contact, just sign up in that thread below.

How: Students, townies, and teachers will be able to buy tickets to trade in for food at the booths on Saturday, and profits go to the Playhouse. Sophie will be requesting that those cast members who wish to can sell tickets early, or they can be bought and exchanged for food at the benefit.

Hello Fandom! The day after your prized possessions go back to being normal ... well, it's still going to be pretty darn weird, because next Monday (July 13) is Typos Come True Day.

It's like this: We all sometimes ping the wrong character into a scene (occasionally causing great trauma), type the wrong name entirely, randomly change character genders through misuse of pronouns, or use horrifically wrong icons. And sometimes we aren't all there and type something like "he poured ketchup onto his face" or "she was literally throwing shit at the walls," to quote two examples.

Thanks to random Fandom weirdness (I like to think the island is trying to tell us to type better), that's all going to happen for real. For example, in this thread, Jack *would* have randomly been there when I typed Jack's name, and would have stayed that way until we found an IC way to fix it -- typing Tyler's name properly would work. And if I made the typo I'm always terrified I might make someday and said "he touched her waste," well, he'd have a hand full of you-know-what. And if I accidentally use an animal icon ... guess what? My character is an animal for a couple of pings. And so on.

None of these typo-caused changes would last past the end of the scene or thread.

Real typos are usually funnier than the forced ones, but forced ones might make for good crack too.

OOC communication is love on this, especially if you're going to make something really weird happen.

So this coming weekend, July 11-12th, the island is going to be hit by what I like to call the Velveteen Rabbit effect.

The Velveteen Rabbit is a story told from the pov of stuffed animals and is all about how, if a child really really loves you, you become real. This is pretty much what's going to happen on the island this coming weekend -- any inanimate object that is loved and valued by the people of Fandom will become human.

ie. Dean loves his 1967 impala; this weekend, the impala will be a hot woman. (Since she's a hot car.) A jedi values their lightsaber, it could turn into a guy with electric blue hair. It could be anything really, as long as it is loved by someone -- a piece of clothing (ie Chuck's scarf),a piece of jewelry, a weapon, a technological device (I mean we all love our computers, right?), a book, a stuffed animal like in the original story. Anything that is not actually alive but that your character loves can be affected.

If you don't want your objects to turn human for a weekend, that's fine. The island is often capricious to what gets affected and what doesn't. Or maybe your character just doesn't love any object enough for it to change. It's all good.

Standard OOC communication expectation regarding any aggressive or ah, overly frisky actions will apply with the temporarily human objects just as they do with normal characters.

The change will happen sometime in the wee hours of Saturday morning and everything will change back late Sunday night.

Questions? Ideas for potential objects coming alive you want to see? Pie?

Flamingo Croquet. Fun for the whole family. )

When the game has ended, the flamingos are going to realize just how lovely Fandom is, even if it does have some rather loud and stupid people in it. They will be taking up permanent residence in the duck pond. :)

Questions? Comments? Brine shrimp, for the flamingos?

Hey there Fandomites! Fandomians? Whatever we're called. So there's another little plotty thing going be happening soon for the holiday season.

Ever seen It's a Wonderful Life? It's sorta like that.

Blame it on Fandom weirdness or the spirit of the season, starting next Sunday, December 15 and ending on Christmas Eve, the people of Fandom are going to be able to have visions showing them what their life would be like if something was changed. It can be something big, like being able to see what would happen if they'd never been born, or something little, like "What if I hadn't missed class last week?"

you know you want to see the details i'm sparing from your flists )

So, in honor of Thanksgiving and the massive quantities of food about to be consumed all across America...

We give you an invasion of turducken.

Yes, the delicious chicken stuffed in a duck, stuffed in a turkey. Feel free to mod the fully cooked and delicious treats showing up in random places for your eating or boggling over!

The Fandom weather forecast for Thursday calls for scattered showers -- of colored rocks! They won't concuss you - they'll just turn you the same color(s) as the rock(s) that hit you.

That's right: rocks fall, everyone dyes.

You can all groan in [livejournal.com profile] firebringerborn's direction for that one.

The effect can wear off whenever you want it to, but won't last beyond the end of Thursday. Since it's a weather condition, it'll be localized, so this one won't spread off the island.

I swear, this will be the last post from me for quite some time.

Tomorrow, Saturday, sees Spring Cleaning infect Fandom. But it's Fandom, so it's not people using cleaning supplies, it is cleaning supplies and accoutrements using themselves!

Yup, they've come to life and will insist on cleaning everything - and everyone, if you're not fast enough to get out of their way. They won't use any harmful chemicals on people, though, nor scrub hard enough to actually hurt anyone.

Soon, there will a bright and sparkling clean Fandom!
[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com
It is rapidly warming up, turning into spring, and snow will become a thing of the past.

Not tomorrow, however. Tomorrow it will snow, on and off all day.

But this will be no ordinary snowfall.

This will be a snowfall of giraffes.

Wee giraffes, who melt as they hit the ground. It will take a few minutes for them to melt away completely, and it is up to you what they do while they melt.

They might scream. They might try and escape on rapidly melting legs. They may bear their rapid demise with typical giraffe stoicness*.

The snow of wee giraffes will begin tomorrow morning, nice and early, and end once the sun goes down. So, mod yourself a herd, a flurry, a bundle of wee snow giraffes!

Also, please note that this idea was conceived and suggested by [livejournal.com profile] gobrooke_urself. Blame her!

So, October Fourth is World Animal Day.

In honour of this, Fandom is going to be afflicted with a specific weirdness -- people (students, townies and teachers - this weirdness can hit everybody) randomly turning into animals of the world. For a minute, for an hour or for the entire day, as many times as you want!

It will be completely random, it could happen as they're talking, walking, or riding their bike...though that might not be very safe. So go for it, have fun, no animal is too weird! The random transformations will cease at midnight.

Questions, comments, four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie?
