let's sneak this on in before the newbies land
Guess what! It's that time of year again!
....Wait, you mean we didn't do this last year and it's been a different month every time? Well... shut up. Let's pretend! Because it's time fooooooooooooooor...
SOAP OPERA WEEKEND!!
That's right, boys and girls! September 10-11 we are going to revisit the wonderful crack that comes out when your characters stop being polite, and start getting real. Or something. There'll be an alumni event on Friday, September 9 so alumni, students, teachers and townies can all be involved. Then on Saturday morning, you have the option of making them wake up as a soap opera character.
For those of you who weren't around for previous years, Soap Opera weekend is exactly what it sounds like. Much like AU weekend and such, for a weekend, the denizens of Fandom go through some changes... Namely, while your characters are still themselves, they behave like characters on a soap opera and think this is totally normal. For instance, Jaina Solo will still know herself as Jaina Solo, she just may be the heiress to the Skywalker diamond mine fortune who goes around stealing her double's identity and escaping ruined weddings on horseback after catfights in the pond.
Monday morning, everyone will wake up themselves, and probably wtf a lot. Alumni will also get to hang around on Monday, as while they're spending the weekend lying to someone about whose baby they're carrying or going around getting amnesia, they're probably not thinking much about catching a portal home.
The Rules!
-DO NOT decide anything for someone else's character without their permission. If I want Belle to be the good twin to Hermione's bad twin, it's totally possible on SOW, but I'd have to drop a line to Belle's player to tell her what I wanted to do. Be as cracky as you want, but keep those lines of communication open.
-While participation is voluntary, it's unavoidable in the same way AU kids and AU weekends are. Which means you should have fun with it. *nods*
-You also have the chance to do things you wouldn't ordinarily be able to do in regular gameplay without a plot proposal. Which means if I wanted Annie to drown in a horrible boating accident off the coast, or if I want Susan to be a secret witch with a doll named Timmy who talks to her, I could do it. It just won't be permanent. On Monday, they'll wake up alive and well and completely normal. (I would appreciate if you drop a line to let the admins/me know if you want to kill someone in a mob war or something, since that that's something that could get big and affect more than your run of the mill death would. If you have any doubts about whether you can or should do something, ask.)
-This is so totally not a rule, but I highly encourage y'all to mix it up. If you're thinking you want your character to find a long-lost sibling, why not have it be a character you haven't played with before rather than someone you play with every day? For those of you wanting to expand your circles, this could be a really good opportunity to do so.
-Don't worry if someone else is using the same schtick. Soap operas aren't exactly original. In fact, if there aren't eight Alexis/Krystle-style catfights that end up in the lake, I'm going to be REALLY REALLY upset. Catfights are so 2008.
That's the basics. I'm also throwing down a comment below for brainstorming, should anyone have something they WANT to see that weekend that they don't automatically claim for themselves, or you want to find someone to be your new husband/wife/suspected babyparent/evil twin/supposedly-dead parent/Kelly to your Brenda.
