BDE NPCs: IC Brainstorming Post

Dark. Clammy. Run by an overexcitable thirteen-year-old.

The Perk had not lost its name over the past few decades, though no one remembered nor cared what the name stood for at this point. It had gone through considerable redecorating, as had most of the island: grey tones, interspersed with red and yellow. Lions. That sort of thing.

Some of the servers were simply quiet and slightly rude. Others had sunken eyes and shivering hands. There were still a few scraps of pie up for sale, for the usual prices - much more than they would've asked for them a scant few years ago.

There was a sign in merry retro-neon screaming at you to Respect Your King. That was nice.

Most of the color had been ripped from the walls in fits of revolutionary fury. Now, the dorms were a tribute to minimalism-- to a point, at least. Screens lined the walls of the halls and the common rooms. They could be activated with a touch, for anyone interested in re-reviewing any of the myriad of entertainment programs they offered.

They were all either distractions or propaganda. But who cared, right? Grab your measly ration of the day and watch a nice, soothing documentary on the rise of the glorious leader Frank Underwood, Jr. This one's got extra romance!

Oh, yes, Johnny was going to sit down in a common room and watch the TV with his meal. You could tell just by looking at him that he was concentrating very hard on what he was watching.

Oh, no, he wasn't paying attention to the program. He was mostly making sure that he was properly projecting focused heat into the TV without letting it set on fire. Fire caused suspicion. Overheating TVs were a standard manufacturer defect.

And that was how Johnny Storm passed the time until the secret meeting later tonight.

Half-built castle. Monks. Pig shit.

The marketplace is jammed with people: a noisy mix of day laborers from the construction site at the top of the hill, peddlers praising their wares at the top of their voices, and the occasional gang of students in outfits from a dozen worlds and accents almost as varied. The passageways between stalls are dirt on a good day, mud on a bad, and don't step too closely to the homes surrounding the marketplace if you don't fancy a drenching from a chamber pot being emptied out the front door.

Winter has been holding on tightly this year, so the food pickings are slim: potatoes, beets, turnips, all looking well past their best, and the farmers are increasingly desperate to get anything in trade from Fandomites in order to feed their families. Woven cloth, hand-made weaponry and wooden furniture are also available for cash or barter, and if you know the right person to ask, magical herbs and charms can be bought from a well-hidden stall toward the back of the market just past the smithy.

Watch your pockets as you wander around: not everyone here is honest folk.

Red was walking through the market-place, picking up a few things for dinner. She'd brought in a deer (teal, but once she'd stripped the hide, who could tell?) and gotten a good price for the meat, as well as a few rabbits. Unlike most people, she could still manage to get food for herself quite nicely.

She was considering buying a few charms to send home to Granny, and maybe a weapon or two for Charming and Snow.

Absolute silence reigns in the library, where monks and students with enough patience and nice enough calligraphy carefully hand copy Biblical passages and other, more esoteric, tomes to be placed inside the cavernous Special Collections. Interrupting the silence with anything less important than an island-wide invasion will be met with punishments ranging from a month's worth of time peeling potatoes for Friar Tuck in the kitchen to a week in the castle dungeon with the resident troll. The castle--and it would be massive when it was completed--might be only half-finished at this point, but the dungeon was one of the first major projects completed, which said something (and not something good) about those running that particular building project.

Most people learned quickly to shut up coming into the library and those who didn't were seldom seen twice inside these rooms.

Military. Free. Sunny.

The barracks of Fandom looked nothing like the dorms they would one day give way for. The building itself was a tall mess of columns and solid walls and a surprising amount of garish color. Blues and yellows and reds mixed haphazardly across the marble. A nearby statue - orange and brown and an inspired dash of purple - seemed to smile down on the training grounds as it held up its spear.

It was a nice day for morning exercises. The sun shone bright on the yellowed grass and a cool wind rolled in from the sea.

"AUGUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH!" Super Grover cried as he crashed helmet-first into the ground.

At least he'd improved slightly in the time since he'd arrived in Fandom?

That might not be much comfort to anyone he'd woken up or landed on, though...

The town was always a bustle, but there was one place of peace to be found on its premises. The gardens, beautifully designed by artisans and craftsmen to exude beauty as well as grandiosity. Blue and green pillars jutted up majestically from the ground, covered in ivy and a gorgeous variety of flowers. There were benches along the path to sit in and small covered areas to escape the sun.

In the center, surrounded by pink flowers, stood a fountain. Water clattered down into the basin below, occasionally obscuring the sight of the coins that laid on the bottom. Peaceful, yes, but not always uncrowded.
