General Brainstorming- A Storming of Brains!

Hi, folks! Those of you who were paying attention to the last Open Forum on into the wee hours of the morning (very wee, in fact, and Shannons should never stay up that late, sheesh) might have already figured out that I'm the sucker volunteer who offered to kick these things back into gear! Hi!

Those of you who have been around for a while might remember the brainstorming posts of old. A post would go up on a monthly basis, and people would chime in with ideas, suggestions, fully fleshed-out event ideas, little nibbly bits to dangle in front of fellow players, and so on, with the intention of drumming up new material and events for us to bring into the game. These things led to some pretty awesome stuff over the years, some of which have become regular Fandom staples since, like aged-up AU kids, Tabula Rasa, and Veritaserum days.

A few quick notes before I let you get to the brainery stormery stuff:

- First of all, these things are open for anyone in the game to chime in with their ideas, suggestions, and whatever spare parts they might have to contribute. I know I see a lot of awesome ideas pop up around Twitter from time to time that a lot of people miss out on because of the time of day or simply not having Twitter accounts, so it would be awesome if those ideas were to turn up here as well so that everyone can enjoy them!

- I'll be putting posts up on the first Saturday of every month from now on. I've actually set up notifs on my phone to remind me, because I occasionally like to play at being an organized adult.

- And it should be noted, too, that these posts are just for brainstorming, and that whatever sort of mod-approval type things people come up for in here still need to be run by the admins if we want to see them come into play in the game at large. Simply sharing an idea here isn't a guarantee that it will happen, but it's a good first step to gauging interest!

- The Admins have been kind enough to give me access to the Spreadsheet List of Past Brainstorming Ideas, which might need a little bit of grooming - Events that have been highlighted in pink have been done at some point or another, and I have the brains of a goldfish and don't trust myself to remember every random event we've done in the last three years. If you guys would be kind enough to ping into the appropriate OCD if you notice anything that hasn't been highlighted that should be, I would be super appreciative, thanks! I'll be keeping this sucker up-to-date with new ideas and highlighting things as they get played out from here on in.

- Also, so many kudos to TBQ and to Shanie, who started this thing back in the day and kept it going for a super long and fruitful run. I'm shamelessly stealing their setup for these myself, because it was familiar to the game at large, and good and effective.

Come one, come all, and let us storm some brains!

For awhile, I've been trying to poke and prod at a The Last Starfighter plottish idea thing. It's nothing but some vague ideas but basically, I had the idea of some race of alien/creature/whatever taking notice of the fair island and coming down and basically recruiting for a fight against a bad alien/creature/whatever race. They'd be responsible for flying ships they have no knowledge of and using foreign weapons and trying to get along with the people that recruited them.

So, people are recruited and taken away voluntarily to the homeworld of the alien race that needs help to fight/defend/provide aid/etc while those that don't want to leave stay back and interact with android duplicates of those that are off fighting. I'm sure the island could also be drawn into plot by being a beacon for the bad guys.

Again, this is all really just thoughts in my head because I love that movie and I always will. It's pretty rough but hey, why not at least toss it out there?

I do not have anything helpful to say except I WANT THIS A++++.

Oh, and I'd been considering bringing back Sam and Max for a cracky variation on this -- not the Last Starfighter but rather "hey, shit is messed up, we need people to come punch things for a weekend, who's down?" I like the idea of a MDE that we travel out to, instead of the weird coming to us.

Agreed! Going elsewhere to help someone else or fight a big bad threatening someone who is handily overwhelmed would be pretty damn cool and different.

The island could still be involved as sort of a sanctuary (and give people the ability to play NPCs they might not normally play as refugees or something) or as a second battleground or what have you.

I want some kind of a badfic weekend where not only are characters hugely, hugely OOC, but spelling and grammar go right out the window, and pings become hilariously horribad.

Bonus points if anyone pings drunk.

... yes, this is inspired by how amazing Badfic!Hermione was.

Everything is either just blandly stated, or ridiculously floridly full of adjectives!

Potentially in the same sentence!

This is probably more of a weekend-event. Rather than time holes, suggested before, that act like mini-gates to different times where people/creatures can cross through, what about time waves. Basically, over a weekend, time waves crash over the island and everyone suddenly thinks it's 1960 or 1872 or 1776 don't mind me I think I'm hilarious.

So, say, at noon EST, it's suddenly Regency England and everyone is wearing gloves and talking like they're extras in Pride & Prejudice. Then, at five, it's 2015--but Back to the Future style. And at ten, we tumble back to Flintstone-esque prehistoric days, where there are humans and dinosaurs living together and every appliance is some random animal pressed into service. (Okay, actually, a Flintstone day/weekend by itself would be cool.)

Alternately, if switching every few hours seems like it would be too hectic, we could make this a non-BDE weeklong event, with the times changing every 8-12 hours or so. Because didn't you always want to go to school like Anne of Green Gables and write on chalkboards, with boys winning 'Best Arithmatic' awards while girls could win 'Best Handwriting'? (No, that never REALLY BOTHERED ME as a kid, why would you ask?) Or class Greek-symposium style, where someone just stands and talks and students gather to listen and occasionally someone else walks by and starts arguing.

This would be especially awesome from a teaching perspective: suddenly being a schoolmarm or Socrates zomg. So I am just saying "I like it" and being unhelpful.

Okay, so. This is something I've been kicking around since last summer and have mentioned to a few people here and there but don't yet have the confidence in myself to run effectively, but.

Field trip to Equestria, anyone?

There's an olympics type event that happens in Equestria per canon called the Equestria Games. I was thinking that Pinkie could invite Fandom people (potentially anyone who wanted to come along, PINKIE IS NOT GOING TO TURN DOWN MORE FRIENDS) to Equestria to go see them. This could go two different ways: they take Portalocity to Equestria and are all humans in pony land OR I catch up with my canon through Equestria Girls and Twilight Sparkle creates a portal for the Fandom people, which means EVERYONE TURNS INTO A PONY (yes, MLP has in-canon pony-to-human-to-pony portal dynamics!) to go to pony land.

I could see either of those being hilarious and amazing.

Anyway, I was thinking generally this could work as a summer thing? Maybe an opportunity between sessions? Or it could be an official school trip? I dunno. I really have only gotten as far as "FANDOM IN EQUESTRIA, EEEE", so.

I WANT TO BE A PONY. I WANT TO BE A PONY SO MUCH.

WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS HOW MUCH I WANT MY CHARACTERS TO BE PONIES.

(I know we have had these events in-game and whatnot but MUST ALWAYS CHOOSE PONY.)

I think this could, with some work, be shaped into a week long plot in the vein of AU Weekend and AU Kids and the lot.

Somewhere in town, a fog appears out of nowhere. It might be confined to one specific area but it'd have to be something fairly central so everyone could get a chance to play with it. Not dirty. No one questions it because it's weather, right?

If someone wanders into the fog, they're immediately given their heart's desire. So, if Flick wandered into it, he'd get his brother back. If Travis wandered into it, it'd be like he never died and Cate was still his girlfriend. And whoever wandered into it would believe that these things were absolutely true and right. When they left the fog, they'd believe these things were still true. So, Flick would go around telling people that Jude was alive despite having probably told the same people he was dead.

Sometimes, people might spend days in this fog, missing classes, missing work, missing teaching but, to them, they'll be living their life as they want to live it. They'd come out of the fog looking disheveled and like they were gone for awhile. But, they'd keep going back because who can resist what they really want?

Eventually, the fog would dissipate and those who spent time in the fog would be bereft and traumatized (YOU ALL LOVE TO TRAUMATIZE YOU KNOW IT) with having lost what they want and knowing it wasn't really real in the first place.

Not quite sure how this would work, but I just finished Thief of Time, and I know there's some wonky machinery that drives the island:

The Procrastinators (magic stone prayer wheels that store time and increase/decrease time) go wonky, resulting in days passing Fandom time for minutes on the Mainland, or vice versa. Or local issues, like classes that seem to go on forever or an afternoon in the park that goes by in a blink.

[personal profile] spin_kick_snap 2015-03-07 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, we just had the Glitter blizzard and there was an 80's day--not specifically slang, but the 80s in general. I can't find a link to that, but it was when Karla was a student. Holes in time sounds like timerifts BDE, but I don't know Primeval, so I can't say for sure.
myownface: (Awkward Drunken Moment)

Re: Little help!

[personal profile] myownface 2015-03-07 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
... I have no idea how I missed the glizzard, but I'd totally forgotten about the 80's day thing and I'll be updating both, thanks!

I also don't know Primeval, unfortunately. And while the BDE had something that was remarkably similar to the suggestion, it was with holes in time and the very fabric of reality itself. Like that suggestion amped up to ten. But without knowing the canon, I don't know if I can make that call either.

... That said, there were totally dinosaurs.

Thoughts, folks?
