Character Abilities Tally!

Hey, guys!

For everybody's convenience, for both BDEs and personal plots, we try to keep a running list of the various abilities possessed by FH characters; the last time we did this was in January, so three runs of newbies later seemed like a good time to catch up.

If you ever find yourself saying, "Hey, I need a magic user/archer/ninja/dork who has all the dialogue to Galaxy Quest memorized," this list of powers is meant to be there for you to take a look at. It's not mandatory; it just gives everybody a better reference when they're looking for people to help out with plots, and hey, might get your character roped into something fun!

Here's how we deal with updating this baby!

  • All of the previous posts have been compiled into a spreadsheet that you can always head over to check; it's linked on the FH community info page.

  • This post only needs to be filled out for new characters, or if you have a correction/update for your older ones. If your stuff is listed over on the spreadsheet and nothing's changed, there's no need to fill out that category again. (And my poor aging eyes will love you because it's one less cell to update on a seven-page spreadsheet.)

  • Anything that is

    a) a canon power or ability of your character, or
    b) a skill/ability developed during their time in the game

and could be used in a plot in some way, please list below in the correct thread. This is for all character types - students, teachers, townies and alumni/expats - and covers everything, not just the wacky powers. We also appreciate yer fighting, research, weapons, support skills and ability to speak Tev'Meck.

  • The categories focus on "what can you do" instead of worrying about whether that's a magic or mutant or species-specific ability. So wacky powers are broken into spellcasting, psionic powers, and superhuman physical attributes, and non-wacky powers are divided into weapons, fighting, support, and miscellaneous (aka "It doesn't seem to fit in any of those groups, but dammit, you need to know that my character can do it!")

Thank you so much in advance for taking the time to do this!

[Wait for the OCD or NO CUPCAKES. OCD up, cupcakes for all!]

Tyrion is expert level in diplomacy/strategy/executive support -- in canon, he gets named Hand of the King in two-ish years, with no special training between now and then, and does a good job at it. He's very good at seeing what his resources are and figuring out ways to use them, and he's not particularly squeamish about playing dirty.

Vincent has a PhD in molecular gastronomy. This means he cooks very, very, very well. He also cooks when he's worried, so it's a fair bet that if he knows something spooky's going down on the island, he'll be there with a coffee cart and pastries for the worried standersby if nothing else.

He's also lived in Eureka long enough to have picked up a few quantum physics concepts and has a refrigerator powered by a very small nuclear reactor.

Kenzi is an accomplished pickpocket, decent forger, knows how to hot-wire cars, and does the occasional break-in. She's also pretty good at getting people to tell her stuff, and is handy with the iPhone record button. So, a pro-level thief, though not expert yet.

Sam's awesome with a set of lockpicks, and has a tendency to carry around hardware and tools. Up to and including an electric jigsaw with a hack blade (the better to cut the chain on your door with).

Kate isn't an academic in most ways, but due to a crazy upbringing speaks a few languages and reads several more. Canonically she's strongest in Russian, Latin and English, but can read weird ancient languages so I'd imagine she has a certain basic knowledge in things like Hebrew and ancient Greek because they come in handy when reading ancient magic scrolls.

She also knows a ridiculous amount about mystical creatures. Like a walking encyclopedia.

Medically, she can slap on an R-kit or a bandage, mumble a few healing chants and has a small stock of rm3d.

Alex is fluent in both Japanese and ancient Greek, and knows quite a bit about Greek and Japanese mythology. He's also moderately good at breaking and entering and snooping for information..

Like his brother, Peter is insanely clever. His skills have been more well-honed in the area of PR and politics, though. Basically, Peter has a knack for doing up contacts and managing them, and finding ways to spin the information he gets into getting done what he wants done.

His special 'Wiggin talent' is being able to pick out what people are afraid of, and use it to manipulate them. Since that's purely a case of him being observant and able to analyse well, that goes here, too.

Hermione is the brainy sidekick, with an extensive knowledge of a lot of subjects and pretty good at finding the information she needs if she doesn't already know something. She's also used potions to aid in healing.

Ryan has experience in providing first aid and treating minor ailments. She's not afraid to help treat any exotic illnesses (and bizarre injuries) but lacks a full medical education.

Warren knows his way around first-aid, having gotten more than a little bit of experience in that field since coming to Fandom. Between practical medical practises (setting a bone, making a splint, CPR and so on) and that ever-so-convenient healing factor of his, he's getting to the point where he's a fairly useful addition to any situation where people are going to get hurt.

He's also got a fair bit of tact, diplomacy, and reasoning skills, which come in more handy than you'd think when dating a Glacian Queen.

Mercy has some good basic first aid knowledge and can sew you up or pull buckshot out of your butt if need be. Though she'd rather not.

Is a neeeeeerd of the highest order with an eidetic memory. Speaks French (albeit a variety that will probably make most people who know the language's heads spin). Is absurdly up-to-date with recent scientific developments in just about any field you can name.

Lucrezia knows Italian, Catalan, French, Latin, and Greek. She's also good at particularly ruthless problem solving -- i.e., maiming a husband to stop his abuse.

In addition to being way smart, Lex is geeky research boy, he mightn't know about something but he knows how to find someone who does.

He also knows a couple of languages, Japanese, German, a smattering of Greek and Latin thanks to Lionel's classical history fetish.

You need something stolen, access into a room, or someone to climb up a four story stone wall (canon) or more? This former-thief is your man. Very proficient in lockpics & disarming traps, pickpocketing, detecting secret hideyholes/passages, etc. Some negotiation/diplomacy skills, to boot (for con jobs or state matters).

Military/squire training, knows logistics of troops & campaigns, command structures, strategy, etc. for warfare in a Medieval-ish setting with more swords than sorcery.

Basic wilderness skills (such a city boy).

Marshall's skills are definitely science-oriented, vis a vis researching, chemistry, and technical work. He's not an inventor, exactly, but he knows how to work with systems and put them together. He's also a programmer, writing custom firmware for mobile phones he built and sold to his classmates at his last school.

Ronan is an adept magical healer, and has a solid base in basic non-magical medicine. He's also... something of a xeno-specialist, having spent roughly a year doing internships in clinics around the galaxy, so if anyone needs someone familiar with non-human biology, Ronan's probably your guy.

Also, as a YW!style wizard, Ronan speaks and understands the Speech, which theoretically allows him to understand any language, spoken or written, and be understood in turn, no matter what the native language. So far that's been played straight across different dimensions, but obviously I'm open to it working differently, or not at all, in other people's universes. (That said, it not working means that Ronan's magic also wouldn't work, but that's just one more thing to play with!)
