Character Abilities Tally!

Hey, guys!

For everybody's convenience, for both BDEs and personal plots, we try to keep a running list of the various abilities possessed by FH characters; the last time we did this was in January, so three runs of newbies later seemed like a good time to catch up.

If you ever find yourself saying, "Hey, I need a magic user/archer/ninja/dork who has all the dialogue to Galaxy Quest memorized," this list of powers is meant to be there for you to take a look at. It's not mandatory; it just gives everybody a better reference when they're looking for people to help out with plots, and hey, might get your character roped into something fun!

Here's how we deal with updating this baby!

  • All of the previous posts have been compiled into a spreadsheet that you can always head over to check; it's linked on the FH community info page.

  • This post only needs to be filled out for new characters, or if you have a correction/update for your older ones. If your stuff is listed over on the spreadsheet and nothing's changed, there's no need to fill out that category again. (And my poor aging eyes will love you because it's one less cell to update on a seven-page spreadsheet.)

  • Anything that is

    a) a canon power or ability of your character, or
    b) a skill/ability developed during their time in the game

and could be used in a plot in some way, please list below in the correct thread. This is for all character types - students, teachers, townies and alumni/expats - and covers everything, not just the wacky powers. We also appreciate yer fighting, research, weapons, support skills and ability to speak Tev'Meck.

  • The categories focus on "what can you do" instead of worrying about whether that's a magic or mutant or species-specific ability. So wacky powers are broken into spellcasting, psionic powers, and superhuman physical attributes, and non-wacky powers are divided into weapons, fighting, support, and miscellaneous (aka "It doesn't seem to fit in any of those groups, but dammit, you need to know that my character can do it!")

Thank you so much in advance for taking the time to do this!

[Wait for the OCD or NO CUPCAKES. OCD up, cupcakes for all!]

Kate isn't super magic proficient in practice, but she had a whole chunk of natural power especially relating to necromancy.

She can cast spells, create wards to keep bad things in and out of places, and can create and control undead. She also owns two 'power words', mine and release, the use of which is open to interpretation but which is described as 'old magic' and extremely difficult (almost impossible) to resist. She's used it in canon to mind control on people and make fireballs amongst other things.

Apparently magic can be done by humans in Kenzi's world, and her family does it enough to know spells that work. Like summoning Baba Yaga, even though that's a terrible, terrible idea.

Witch! Morrigan is pretty powerful, as mages go. She's got a full arsenal of elemental magics, a healthy little black book of curses, and is a master shapeshifter. Monster-spider, bear, a stinging swarm of insects...Morrigan can be quite fluid in what form she wears. She also mentions having been a wildcat, wolf, and other animals in-canon, so it's safe to say her range is quite large, limited only by the animals she has exposure to learn from.

Her big weakness is her healing spells. She has one she can cast fairly frequently, but it isn't very powerful.

Alistair isn't a witch, but he has a small collection of anti-mage spells at his disposal, mostly to do with draining of magic and 'spirit energy', which can knock people off their feet. His Templar training also makes him more resistant to all kinds of spells.

Hermione is an exceptional witch who can do almost any spell needed with a wand, and a couple without. She's very adept at creating controlled fires/flames. She's also able to make potions, transfigure one thing into another, and can Apparate from one location to another.

Elphaba finally gets to go in this category!

Elphie currently can do to things: Move small objects with her magic on purpose (and if she gets super upset, and less in control, larger things), and can summon small amounts of fire.

Yeah, that's it, until she gets more training :D

Cara's not so much with the spellcasting, but she does have a couple of magic-based abilities thanks to the whole Mord'Sith thing.

Firstly, she can turn magic that's cast against her (or someone she's close enough to to get between them and the magic) and magical weapons back against their user, though she seems to need her hands free to do this.

Second, she can raise the (recently) dead with the Breath of Life. The exact limitations on this are fuzzy and plot-related, but basic rule of thumb seems to be that the deceased needs to be pretty fresh, not too extensively damaged, and the windpipe (and presumably at least one lung) needs to be intact.

Ronan is a wizard! His particular variety is... versatile, to say the least; essentially, as long as he can figure out a way to say it in the Speech, he can probably do it. That said, his power levels are down from where they used to be -- excepting people in specialised positions like Seniors and Advisories, YW!wizards go down in power as they age, as a trade-off for experience.

Which is not to say he's weak, just that he's learning more finesse now than brute force.

His speciality is in healing, but he used to focus on battle magics, so he's still got a lot of knowledge there too.

Pinkie has some moderate amount of clairvoyance. Her various bodily twitches predict the future, albeit in vague, loosely defined terms, such as "something's going to fall", "watch out for opening doors", or "there's an alligator in the bathtub."

Sam can tell the supernatural from the non supernatural by colors in his mind. All humans register as certain colors (reds, oranges due to body temperature) but people like vampires, werewolves, zombies, dead things, they all register differently and he can see it in his mind so he'll know what you are unless it's something he hasn't seen before.

Sam also has the ability to 'push' people into doing things he wants. If he wants someone to answer a question, do a jig, jump off a roof, he could push them into doing it with his mind. It's not a skill he uses often.

Okay, just gonna throw this all here since this is my third edit. Sam's a necromancer which means he can raise the dead. He's incredibly powerful (his ability is described as a cold, icy river rushing through him). Raising the dead means he can also see the dead and he's been able to do that since he was a kid even if he thought he was just having a nightmare.

Alex is Phobos, the Greek god of fear, panic, and battlefield rout. This means he has a whole lot of fear-related powers, some of which are vague and unspecified, and if you want to talk to me about using him somehow, we can probably work something out. The specific ones are that he knows what people are afraid of and can induce fear from mild to incapacitating terror, including hallucinations of one's greatest fear. He may seem unnerving or creepy to some more sensitive folk, although he tries to dial it down. He can also induce nightmares either accidentally or on purpose.

He also has a limited form of precognition, in that he somehow just sort of knows what's going to happen next ("This is the part where we we run," "We go through this door, not that one," "This was always going to happen.") Sometimes he doesn't realize he already knew something was going to happen until it's already happening. It's weird.

He also declared himself god of Xbox at one point, but whether or not he is the god of Xbox is up for debate. I just like to joke around with it.

Susan isn't really psychic, but she's able to remember everything, including the past and future. In order for her human brain to handle this without just up and quitting, she experiences premonitions in the form of dreams or memories that come back to her when needed. They're usually just images that don't make sense at the time, and aren't very useful.

Leto, having gone through some changes recently, is now the most powerful prescient ever in his universe. I've limited this in other universes considerably, but if you need someone to know the future he can probably pick up a few things.

I'm going to stick this here... Mercy has some natural immunity to magic. Vampires and the fae mostly can't bespell her (or she's able to break free of it), lots of magic just rolls right off, or it only affects her in odd minimal ways.

However, other magic works just fine. Canon says basically if it's relatively minor harmless stuff it doesn't affect her, but anything really nasty works pretty well.

She can also see ghosts and talk to them - if they're the kind that talk to you. Later on she'll also learn that she can control them, but she doesn't know that now.

Toby can (and will!... although not *all the time*) read your surface thoughts if you're close by. He's also capable of receiving telepathic distress beacons called 'hits'. These are a more total-surround-sound experience than what he usually picks up and have a range anywhere from a few blocks to about 200 km away.

Modifying Zayne's stuff a little too:

Standard Jedi package: telekinesis, empathy, mindtricks, and the occasional vision.

His telekinesis and empathy are decent. He's actually pretty talented with mindtricks. He can't induce visions, but when the Force wants to show him something, it shows him with a powerful vision.

But what sets Zayne apart is the special effect of a learning disability with the Force. Whenever he uses the Force to affect an outcome, whether intentionally or subconsciously, he knocks the Force out of whack and it needs to create additional outcomes to stabilize. This means that wildly improbable things tend to happen around Zayne, often resulting in property destruction, awkward meetings, and sudden death for anyone who tries to kill him. Now that Zayne knows about this disability, he can use it to stack the odds in his favor. He can prepare for the destruction that comes with good things, and he can rely on a well timed miracle when things are looking bleak.

Two words: cartoon physics. Pinkie can do all sorts of things, from blow up like a balloon to hover in the air to bug out her eyes to appear in completely impossible places, so long as the plot -- or the joke -- calls for it. She can swallow things twice the size of her head. She can pull props out of nowhere. She can withstand being smashed by falling boulders. She can even, on rare occasions, pick things up with her hooves as though she has thumbs.

To accomplish this, it's possible she's made of dark matter.

Tyrion can get through a battle and not get himself killed. He's better with a dagger and shield than a full-sized sword, and he's really not the first person you'd call for this in general, but he's spent his whole life around knights -- if you just need to hand somebody something sharp and have them thwack at bad guys, he can do it.

See above: If there's a battle, Tyrion can fight well enough to get himself through it. He's also apparently a decent acrobat, though he doesn't regard it as an especially impressive skill.

Mostly, this means he can dodge.

Tyrion is expert level in diplomacy/strategy/executive support -- in canon, he gets named Hand of the King in two-ish years, with no special training between now and then, and does a good job at it. He's very good at seeing what his resources are and figuring out ways to use them, and he's not particularly squeamish about playing dirty.

His dad is the richest man in his particular universe, and Tyrion is very good at spending money. I'd vaguely assume Fandom is a bit more expensive than Westeros, so he's not quite at buy-yourself-a-spaceship-for-kicks levels, but he's up there with the Darlings and the Worthingtons in terms of ability to throw cash around.

Given the way he uses it in canon, this is too a power.
