I don't have any ideas on how it would work (other than individualized AU's of some type) but man, I want the Zoltar Machine (http://www.zoltarmachine.com/) to show up on the island one day omg!

Ooooooh. One where you get zapped for x time to a potential future?

Re: General Ideas

[identity profile] decoder-rings.livejournal.com 2010-11-17 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep! Just like the movie Big (wherein I took the idea from). A look at a potential future omg!

[identity profile] thinkbetterofme.livejournal.com 2010-11-17 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That could be fuuuuuuun! I am such a sucker for AUs.

I think my main thought on is, is the timing. Should people see a short flash or several days, or even a longer period, and do they just stand there and it happens in a matter of seconds or do they physically disappear?

Oh wait, and sharing AUs. Would people have to consult the machine together to be thrown in a same future, or could they consult it at different times and be thrown right into another's story.

Re: General Ideas

[identity profile] decoder-rings.livejournal.com 2010-11-17 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
All good questions! I hadn't really hashed it out yet since the movie canon states it's for a pretty lengthy amount of time. I think it'd depend on the length of the event and how it's set up. It might be easier to make it part of a bigger event or something.

And I think sharing AU's would just be up to those that wanna share. Like if you and I wanted to share, we'd just have to know that and go from there. I couldn't pop into your future without your knowledge sorta deal.

*noddles*

Definitely, no random jumping in. I'm just pondering how it could work or if it'd be better to keep it all individual, but sharing is fun.

Admittedly, I can't remember a thing of the movie. At least, I think I saw it, but yes.

A bit of a different take could be to just have the machine give a cryptic prophecy, but then slowly people start having dreams of a possible future. If someone wants to share then, they can supposedly be sharing dreams.

I'm just rambling here and possibly have been reading too much Tolkien.

Re: General Ideas

[identity profile] decoder-rings.livejournal.com 2010-11-17 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think sharing could be fun if both parties agreed to it but individual is just fine too. Whatever the preference is, of course.

And prophetic dreams sound cool! They'd probably have to have some sort of pay off so they're not just dreams, IMO.

Re: General Ideas

[identity profile] thinkbetterofme.livejournal.com 2010-11-17 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I think depending on the bigger event, the advantage of the dreams could be that you can more easily spread things out instead of having to cram it all in one day. And people don't have to disappear, so everyone can have the dreams without anyone panicking that X and Y are gone.

Unless, of course, the whole point is to have people worry but perhaps that is a bit too similar to the last BDE and the Weeping Angels.

I like it. It'd be a bit like the "It's a Wonderful Life" Christmas thing from a few years ago, but with more impact. I loved reading what people came up for on that one!

I don't know how to do it so that some people wouldn't be affected or could avoid it, but I was thinking it would be interesting to have another natural disaster happen, like a storm from a nearby hurricane. The islanders have to work together to save buildings and people and animals, etc.

It seems something that the people who aren't fighters would be the bigger star in, especially the support teams, so I thought it would be interesting to see.

I'm sure the island would be in danger from the occasional hurricane, especially during a very active hurricane season. This is a really good idea.

This has actually come up before. Some players have lived through natural disasters and would prefer to keep them out of RP.

I'm not trying to rain on parades (ha), and it may be there's a way to do it that wouldn't bother people, but it's been a sensitive spot in the past.

I also don't want any RP event to seem like it's mocking real tragedy, yes.

My original thought was that the island wouldn't be the actual target of the storm, but would have the peripheral damage that comes from being nearby when one hits.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but I think it was [livejournal.com profile] glacial_witch who mentioned before the idea of us getting some low-level criminals into town, possibly to reside in the warehouse district. I know we don't want psychotic killers running around, but thieves and fences and money launderers? That would be seriously awesome. And it'd give the police something to do, and create some fun conflict for whoever wanted to play with it, ooc. (I.e., a business owner gives permission to be robbed ...)

And to watch them all get "OKAY, THAT WASN'T ME" any time something huge and BDE-ish goes down.

I may have to put the movie version of Guys and Dolls on top of my Netflix queue when I get home.

Yes!

I mean--come on! We have a warehouse district! With abandoned warehouses in it! We're practically laying out the welcome mat for shady types to come in and set up shop. and not welcome Mat, like I originally typed
