Okay, this idea came about because of a comment that [livejournal.com profile] living_endless made in a meme. Pretty much every supernatural canon ever has that one episode/issue where the bad guys make the heroes think that all the supernatural stuff is crap and they are really nuts.

It could be a lot of fun to figure out a way to do this on an island-wide scale. A group of people (or alumni) could be off island when the effect hits and it can be up to them to figure out what is going on and how to fix it while the rest of the people believe that this is the way it's always been or become convinced that they are really crazy.

In Charmed, the bad guy makes Piper believe that Halliwell Manor is really a mental institution where she is locked up because of her delusions about being a witch. He also convinces her that Prue, Phoebe and Paige aren't really her sisters but her fellow patients.

I really, really, really love this idea ... but you know I'm a sucker for anything where powered characters become nonpowered and dynamics shift. Heck, maybe the characters who are *always* mundane recognize the spell's effects and save the day.

One thing I would add -- maybe characters who are nonpowered-but-from-weird-places are also affected? Like, Jack still knows he's Czech, 18, bisexual, etc. ... he just thinks the parts where he lives with a vampire and was born in 1881 are totally insane.

Makes sense to me!

Firekeeper could think the notion of being raised by wolves is nuts, Arthur could think being the prince of Camelot is nuts, etc.

I'm just thinking about that possibility with my bunch of characters and holy fascinating dynamic shift, Batman. Not to mention all kinds of intriguing potential for character growth for anyone involved.

Which is my thoroughly non-contributing way of saying this is an awesome idea.

I completely dig that idea. And since we've established as a game that the island is semi-sentient and reacts in odd ways to external stimuli (wasn't there the whole pining for the Isle of Ikea thing?), maybe the semi-sentient island itself decides its crazy/gets semi-sentient island therapy?

I might need sleep.

I really like that! The island decides "... okay, enough weird, I am FED UP." And the characters need to do something to make it happy again.

"It's okay, Fandom Island! We like you just the way you are! We like you, uh, because you make us act crazy and do embarrassing things and -- okay, someone who's better at lying needs to try doing this."

Now I'm picturing all the unaffected folks having to convince everyone who thinks they're crazy to give the island a giant group hug.

"No. Seriously. HUG THE DAMNED TREE!"

Now I'm picturing Priestly trying to convince Worf to hug a tree.

Worf: No.
Priestly: You have no joy. You know that?

Setting aside the whole discussion on how the problem is solved for a second, I was wondering how this might effect characters whose differences are physical as well. I can see the island making everyone think being a mutant/time traveler/witch is nuts, but the whole idea of it giving Jono a mouth or making it so Nick Knight can go out in the sun ... that's a huge change for those players, and I'd like a few of them to give their thoughts.

Also -- even if someone is mundane, having all their friends say "okay, you know where I said I was a witch for the last three years? I was nuts" at once would be draining like whoa, and might make them think they're crazy too.

I still love the whole concept -- I'm just throwing out random things for us to poke at.

[identity profile] sonofmogh.livejournal.com 2009-12-17 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Just to throw my thoughts in here in case you wanted to go this far: the idea of making Worf human or Jamie without his duplicating ability sounds like an excellent concept and one that I'd love to play off of.

Okay, late to the party, but:

I have this idea for Hayley, which involves Edward Nygma coming in and, basically, trying to have Hayley committed to Arkham Asylum back in her Gotham.

Now, the idea would be that while Edward machinates through bureaucracy a group of Hayley's friends work on a plan to prevent this from happening.

...That's all I got, other than some ideas from some other people that are good, but I was hoping for more input.

...and maybe someone willing to play Edward for me.

Re: Specific Ideas

[identity profile] grand-fallguy.livejournal.com 2009-12-17 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
From wrong account, but count Leda in for keeping Hayley out of the nut hatch!

Re: Specific Ideas

[identity profile] wantstocheer.livejournal.com 2009-12-17 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
What bureaucracy would he be working through? Because I can't see Zoe or Cable letting him get away with it, which would negate the issue of Hayley's friends needing to save her.

However, he could try going through those channels and then, when that fails, attempt to kidnap Hayley, which her friends could save her from. Much like the plot with Gwynn and the Sheriff of Nottingham from a few years ago.

A return of the, everyone seeing ghosts of dead loved ones? I say this because I've got dead loved ones for many of my characters that would be much fun to play with.
