Brainstorming brainstorming brainstorming!

Yep, it's that time again. No, not the one where we go "holy crap, how is the month half over already?"

Okay, it might be that one too. But it's also brainstorming-post time. Don't forget, all previous ideas are available for you to look over too.

Watch me not even try to one-up [livejournal.com profile] willbedone on coming up with a cohesive witty theme for this post.

I dunno. I had a weird idea the other night where Fandom was suddenly very Edenic. No violence, no anger, no clothing...I think it was a spell so that someone else could take over the island, but as people ate apples, they realized that a) everyone else was naked, and b) hey, maybe we should do something about this not-really-hostile takeover of the island.

It's vague, it's weird, I'm blaming real NyQuil. But there you go.

"The Elysian Fields? But only heroes end up here! Dead heroes.

. . . dead, naked heroes."

This is not contributing to your idea at all, but man, I couldn't resist.

OMG! CONTRIBUTE TO MY CRACKED OUT IDEA.

CONTRIBUTE! CONTRIIIIIIIIIIIIIBUTE.

Now I sound like some kind of Den-Mother Dalek. Which would make an awesome band name.

I think that would have to be done very very carefully as that could get incredibly skeevy very fast considering the age range we have even just amongst the students.

IDEK about anyone else but, for instance, a twenty/twenty-one year old seeing a fourteen/fifteen year old naked would creep me out on several levels as a plot/event.

It's not to say that it couldn't be done, of course, but. My two cents, let me show you them.

No, that's toooooooooooooootally a fair crit. Even if it could be handwaved away in the beginning with people not actually noticing, after some folks start waking up, it could get pretty creepy pretty fast.

As kind of a distillation of the original idea, perhaps people are just wrapped in a happy, dream-like state where they don't notice/comprehend the danger until people started waking up out of it? Kind of a cross between the lotus-eaters and (I think, as I've only read synopses) the Jasmine arc from Angel?

[identity profile] apples-n-poetry.livejournal.com 2010-10-13 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooo. I like the happy unaware state a lot better that way--for me, personally, it has a lot less AHHH in it while being fascinating to play in at the same time.

*contemplates*

There's how many people with mind powers around at the moment? They'd either be the least snared or the most snared depending on the details of it, I would think--if they're the least, it gives reason for why they'd wake up and be able to rouse the others. But if they're the most...

Me too, actually. Especially since they could then be used to keep ensnaring the others. Like...I dunno...mind-control vectors.

I don't like that idea, I admit, but that's almost got to be coloured by the fact that I play a telepath who generally keeps her powers v. v. undercover so that's totally influencing it, yeah, when coupled with Ino's general issues on the island about her mentally being ~different~.

But that's a personal problem and I freely admit there are plenty of other possiblities in them being the most ensnared. So. IDEK. This is just a comment.

A nicely useless one. Awesome!

Since we have this spiffy new community center, I had this idea for a while about Dani holding some sort of business seminar for townies and teachers with some sort of guest speaker. The part where I keep getting stuck is who the guest speaker should be or what they should cover.

Maybe open it up like one of the cons for guest speakers? People could bring in a guest star or something. I'd love to get Veronica Palmer on the island, but I reeeeeeeeeally don't think I could keep her up past, like, three days.

Vamp Harmony from AtS. Mostly because I can easily see her and Jessica having a cat fight.

But yeah, totally understandable, this was just me tossing things out there.

I'm trying to think of any other creepy motivational type people that can come in.

Fandom should totally get hit with the Curse of Babel. I . . . have no idea why, but it'd be, like, a catastrophic failure of verbal communication! Without people actually being mute!

. . . Okay, so admittedly, I mostly just like the phrase "catastrophic failure".

Plus, there's options. Like, you could go with putting things in brackets ala when people in Marvel comics speak other languages, or you could go with horrible Babelfish translations if you want to have something OOCly less than decipherable. And the potential for the languages! You could end up with all sorts of odd constructed languages like Esparanto or Verudian or Unamunda -- or end up speaking in l33+ or, like, Visual Basic. You could go with everyone having their own language, or divide the island up into language groups who can understand each other but not anyone else -- potential for mixing up characters who don't often interact with each other.

Oh hey, the caffeine kicked in. Good to know.

[identity profile] onapalebicycle.livejournal.com 2010-10-13 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Could characters who speak rare (rare in Fandom terms, at least) languages default to those? Rikku's native language is Al Bhed, which Reno can understand bits of, and nobody else knows jack about, and it'd be interesting to have her back in that for a few days.

I'm sure she's not the only one on her second (or third) language here -- I seem to remember Dolf mentioning that his English is shaky, for one.

Which leads me to wonder if the characters who are multilingual might not be helpful somehow in saving the day, but I have no idea how or why or anything beyond "Oooh, shiny."

Re: General Ideas

[personal profile] notmyownage 2010-10-13 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
From my perspective, sure, as the spirit of the idea is simply to have people generally be stuck speaking different languages with no translator between individuals/groups. I kind of imagine that those who are multi-lingual would have a bit of an advantage even if the effect sticks them with a single rare (for Fandom) language -- they're more likely to be familiar with general language structures and language barriers, I should think.

As resident Cunning Linguist (... I never get tired of that joke), yeah, that makes total sense. Depending, of course, on the languages in question- an English speaker, for example, will likely be able to pick out key words/structures in a German or French sentence - but will probably have trouble with Spanish if they've never been exposed to it before. They'd also definitely have better coping strategies for dealing with mutual unintelligibility than someone who's existed in a monolingual environment.
