As was promised, we have more information for you regarding the BDE of next week.

First, some background on the virus we're going to be fighting. This is an illness designed to wipe out magic users and those who associate with them. Therefore it was made with the express intention of being resistant to magic and other supernatural forms of healing.

The plague has an incubation time of between 24-36 hours depending upon the nature of the exposure and physical health (in other words, it's up to you, but there is an incubation period). It's going to show up as a very high fever, coughing, severe headaches, vomiting, terrible fever dreams and a telltale lacy rash. Because the designers believed in overkill.

Those with magical/supernatural healing powers will be able to use those powers to help reduce the symptoms (bring the fever down, calm the headaches, etc), but the illness will not be destroyed and will return with a vengeance after from a few minutes to a few hours (depending upon how strong the healer is and OOC communication).

The lucky characters who can self heal can decide based upon their canon and how they wish to play it what the results of that talent is. It can remove the symptoms, destroy the illness only to catch the next mutation coming through, become re-infected, however the player wishes to handle it.

Once the clinic is overburdened and the quarantine is declared, a temporary hospital will be set up in the Town Hall. This is where sick characters will need to end up to be treated and cared for by their friends and the doctors, healers, and healers' assistants.

Along with all this sickness and disease, we're going to need a research team. Because if magic doesn't help and medicine doesn't seem to be working, there's got to be a cure somewhere, right?  (and there is, we promise! And when it's found, it will reveal some of the secrets of the island's past)

Classes will continue during this time (as teachers and TAs are able) and stores and the like are encouraged to stay open.

So below in the OCD, there are places to sign up for characters getting sick, assistants to step up to help the beleaguered clinic folks, and researchers.  Also there's an OCD thread for characters who will be leaving the island for the duration of the quarantine.

Characters can definitely sign up for more than one of these threads - being a researcher or a healing assistant at first definitely doesn't mean the character can't end up ill.

There's no time limit for when you can sign up for these things.  If you don't decide until next Wednesday that you'd like Character X to get sick, that's totally fine.  We're just trying to get an idea of how things are going to fall out so we can plan accordingly.

I think that's it for now.  Information will continue to be forthcoming, but any questions or comments you have are heartily appreciated and will be answered promptly!

ETA:  You can definitely volunteer your characters to do all three things if you want!  The threads aren't mutually exclusive.

From November 12-16, Fandom is going to be experiencing an island-wide plot, AKA a Big Damn Event. However, this BDE is different from the usual.

Fandom Island is going to suffer an outbreak of an extremely vicious and highly contagious illness, one that strikes quick and hard. It's a legacy of Fandom's past, and there's no known cure. Yet. Magic cannot heal it, drugs cannot cure it (though both may alleviate the symptoms temporarily in the early stages), and it's going to take all the people of Fandom to come together to save those who've been infected.

There will be the possibility for character death. Yes, it's that serious. Obviously, character deaths need to be kept to a minimum, but if you are interested in having your character die, let us know in the appropriate thread, including your reasons why you want your character to die, and we'll consider it. Comments are screened.

More information will be forthcoming as it gets closer, but we wanted to let you know now, so you could make any plans. There will be a chance for all characters - Teachers, Townies, Students - to get involved: as researchers, helping to care for the sick, or, of course, catching the illness. We're going to be staggering the rate at which characters get sick, so it increases as the days go on, but anyone who wants to can get sick. There will be a set list of symptoms, but it's up to you how badly or how many affect your character.

If you want to avoid this BDE, you can send your character(s) off island for that week. There will be no penalisation for missing classes, jobs, clubs, etc (this includes Teachers and Townies) but your character must be off the island by midnight November 11 PST and they cannot return until November 17th.. During that time, the island will be locked down in quarantine, with no one permitted to leave or arrive, by physical means or magic.

Okay! Questions, comments, desires for death, toss them in the appropriate OCD below.  Comments are screened, but questions and comments and OCD madness will be unscreened asap.
