Letters from the past

Well, as we established today, the Sorting Engine in the Fandom Post Office is awesome (as is Mr Pratchett, but we already knew that). What this means, apart from having a way to find out where and when people went, is that people who have been sent to the past can send letters to their loved ones in the now (or hated ones, or indifferent ones - love's not a requirement!).

There are going to be some strict parameters on this, just to keep the whole time travelling thing as un-confusing as possible:
-your letter can't arrive until you have actually been abducted. You can have it arrive on the same day, once you've been angelled, if you want, but not before. This is to keep Mr Paradox as far away as possible.
-it needs to be kept only to personal, not plotty, things. Life stories, declarations of love, bitching about OMG NO BOOZE: good. Any information about the angels, beyond what has become common knowledge IG with Zoe's announcement: bad.
-if you are going to mention another victim character, talk to them first and make sure it's all right.

How it will work

Each day, from Thursday until Saturday, we'll put a post up for delivery of the letters. Post either your letter, or a link to your journal where it's posted, in a comment with the recipient's name in the subject header. (This just to keep things all tidy, and make it easy for everyone to read the letters.)

The recipient can either pick it up there and react, or link to the comment and react elsewhere. You could also use these letters as a way of telling the story of what happened to your character in the timeline where they grew old and died, and weren't sent into stasis.

ETA: Remember, once the victim characters go into stasis, changing their timeline from the one they were in when the letters were sent, these letters will disappear, and no one will remember anything about them or what they said.

Questions? Comments? Tasty angel food cake?

For the fighters - OCD finale sign-ups included below )

Tl;dr - no going after the angels until Wednesday night. There will be a post letting people know about it. Until then, ignorance or mild suspicion since the angels seem to be harmless and Fandom weirdness if you have to notice them. They can't be destroyed, but don't let that stop you trying.

Victim-y update!

Greetings, all!

Here is the list of which victim is going where. I think, with the exception of John & Sam Winchester, we managed to give everyone their first choice.
Cut for listy goodness )

BDE: Call for NPCs

Sunday, March 9th, 2008 08:43 am
[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com
Hey all - the BDE kicks off on Monday and we really, really need people to play NPCs. We've got some very cool fictional character NPCs signed up, but we need more!

We also really need people to play generic people from the time for our victims to interact with - bartenders, hookers, street people, stable hands, average workers of the day, etc etc.

These are just background extras, so not a lot of detail required! And, for those places where English is not the primary language, your NPC can totally speak English, so they can communicate with our victims.

Historical accuracy need only be to a general level (think your average blockbuster movie set in the past), so if you don't have a lot of knowledge of a time period, it doesn't matter.

So hop on over here if you can play an NPC and sign on up!

ETA: If you can play a random NPC, no backstory or history, just a generic extra to be thrown at the victims in the past, let us know that, too, please! No need to give the details for the OCs.
[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com
These can be a mix of OCs of the time (Please note that OCs must be normal humans, no special powers, meta-humans etc etc.) and fictional characters from movies, TV, books, plays etc. You can play a real person, but only if they have been portrayed in fiction at some point, and you use that portrayal. Which leaves it pretty wide open!

Click the cut...if you DARE! )

ETA: If you can play a random NPC, no backstory or history, just a generic extra to be thrown at the victims in the past, let us know that, too, please! No need to give the details for the OCs.
[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com
Thank you to everyone for their suggestions! The times/places to which our victims will be sent back are:

London - 1936 - run up to world war two, Jeeves and Wooster

Cairo - 1923 - The Mummy, King Tut's tomb was opened

New York - 1930 - Empire State Building built (well, started)

Chicago - 1933 - Home of the Century of Progress World's Fair

Paris - late 1899 - Moulin Rouge, amongst other things

The events listed are only a small taste of what was happening in those times, and should in no way be seen as limiting what you can do in the past.

The Victims

We'd like you to nominate:
a) The time/place which you'd most like your character to end up, and
b) The time/place you absolutely don't want your character to end up

We'll do our best to make sure people don't end up with the latter, and hopefully get the former! We need this info by midnight Saturday EST.

Only one member of partnered victims needs to ping in, but do check with your partner first!

Historical NPCs

There will be a post coming up in just one second with details for our NPC players!

[
please wait for minimal OCD
Which is up and I just forgot to say, oops. Sorry bout that.]

Hopefully, quite well. This is the nuts and bolts stuff, how it is all going to work.

Firstly, we have a new comm, just for this BDE. [livejournal.com profile] fh_dontblink. This is where all the posts set in the past, for our victims, and where all the posts set in 2008 for our away teams, will take place.

Basically, for each of our victim groups and away teams, there will be a discrete, self-contained adventure within the BDE, as the members survive in the past and find answers in the now, all coming together at the end.

Now with shiny new cuts! )

Questions and comments, please!

Safehouses

The Safehouses will start from Thursday morning. They will work by having an adult or two in charge of a group of people in a largish space. This can be a common room, someone's house, town hall, the suites at the hotel, the gym, (lock in at Caritas?!) etc etc. The campus posts can be put up by students, and the adults ping in whenever they can, if availability is an issue.

The main point is to stay in groups, in a well-lit place with clear lines of sight.

There will be morning ones and evening ones - the evening ones are for sleeping, too. Those staying in the Safehouses can ping in whenever they like, with something of the feel of a slumber party for the night ones. There may be some small cracky things happening in the Safehouses to lighten the atmosphere, and keep everyone entertained.

We will be doing up a schedule of who and when for these soon.

Researchers

Everyone knows how this goes by now, but this time we'll be having research parties in the dorm computer labs as well as the library. There will be certain information found by them, both library researchers and internet researchers .

We'll be randomly picking the people who will find it, so feel free to have your character go off on wild tangents, finding all manner of bizarre possibilities, or simply find nothing at all!

These pieces of information will lead to the away teams being sent out, there to find the keys to the angels - five pieces of information that together will unlock the secret of how to defeat them.

Away Teams

There will be more info coming for the away teamers, but for now: there will be five groups, and they will start being sent out on Thursday/Friday.

Anyone who wanted to be a victim and got RNG'd out is welcome to sign up for the away teams. You must sign up below by midnight Friday EST or miss out. There will be a detailed away team post and a list of our away teamers on Saturday morning.

NPCs and you

WE WANT YOU!

We need people to play NPCs! People to play the angels and people to play NPCs in the past for our victims. We haven't decided on where each of the five locations will be yet, but the time period will be the 1920s/30s.

If you want make a suggestion as to where they end up and when, there is an OCD thread for that, too.

If you want to wrangle an angel or puppet an historical character, this is the place to let us know - we really can't do this one on our own! If you could indicate below if you
a) want to play an NPC,
b) whether you want to play an angel or a character from history, or both
c) Your availability the week of the BDE - more days you won't be available, or it will be spotty

There will be more to come !(Are you sick of this yet?)

[wait for OCD, plz It is up - have at it.]
[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com
You may be experiencing a strange sense of déjà vu. Don't worry, it's not a glitch in the matrix.

The following people are our victims, who will be split into five groups of six: Cut for list )

Now, what we need from each of our victims is:

1) Pick one other person on the victim list that you want to be in a group with. (Make sure they're okay with it, first, though!) That way we can simply throw together three sets of pairs.

This does not mean you will disappear at the same time as the other half of your pair, just that you'll end up in the same victim group.

If you don't care, just let us know and we'll toss you in a group.

2) Nominate your two preferred days to become a victim to the angels - IF IT MATTERS (Monday to Saturday, only. No vanishing on Sunday.). Also, if there is a day that you absolutely cannot be available to be angelled, definitely let us know.

If you don't care, and you'll be available whenever, then let us know that, too.

You MUST ping with this info by Friday midnight EST, so we can get you a full schedule of character disappearances as soon as possible. If we don't hear from you, we'll just randomly assign you to a group and a day.

Old, old, old

Now, on to the next bit. As you would have read in the last info post, we need some characters who will be alive (but OLD) in 2008 when the away teams come looking, and some who will have spent their life finding out what the angels were. If you want your character to be one of those, please indicate so below. Numbers will be limited on this.

Live through the ages

This one is not necessary for the plot, but it would provide a very unique opportunity. We may still choose not to go with it, depending on how things pan out.

Do you have a character with an overdeveloped sense of responsibility who would refuse to go into stasis? Who would choose to stay out and age naturally, dying before 2008, to watch over their fellows?

If so, you can volunteer them below. This would be the end of your character, they would die, but they would get to live a full, if handwavy, life. Think about it, and if you want to, then sign them up, and we'll let you know.

Limitations on the handwavy history/future you develop for your character (Now behind a cut, 'cause I'm wordy )

Next post? Yet MORE information. And just a reminder, the dates for this are Monday, 10 March to Sunday, 16 March.

ETA: Anyone who needs to pre-play their abduction, can you let us know in the magically created thread that is actually UNDER the OOC? Thank you!

[please wait for OCD, thanks We have reached OCD. Go thou forth and ping.]

And so I learn a valuable lesson about jumping the gun, and not catching up on things before I post.

Many, many apologies - I failed to note that the signups for various groups close at midnight tonight, and so jumped the gun rather spectularly.

Look for the same post tomorrow, only with a revised victim list, as the latest to sign up will be incorporated and the whole lot RNGd again.

Again, my apologies for the confusion.

(I've left comments disabled because I can't bear to delete all that OCD, but feel free to email me and poke me with sticks!)
[identity profile] vkandis-son.livejournal.com
Okay, now that we have an idea of the sorts of numbers we're dealing with, it's time to outline in more detail what's going to be happening for this BDE. A list of victims will go up in the next post, and we'll be asking you to make some choices as well as nominate for groups. There will also be a further post on the safehouses, with more details, and specifics about how this is all going to work from an organisational/posting standpoint.

All About The Victims )

The Away Teams )

Optional off-screen handwaviness )

The Blinkers and Teleporters )

That's great, but what about all the dead/old victims? )

…what? )

Questions/comments are so very welcome, and there are more posts to follow in a minute!

As previously mentioned, we're trying full exposure with this semester's BDE. The following is a list of the groups of people we need for this plot, along with a description of what each group is going to have to do.

The Victim Group )

The Library/Internet Research Group )

The Away Group )

The Fighting Group )

The Home Guard Group )

So, sign up! We need people to sign up to be in the victim group and in the away group. We need an indication of whether your character will be in the research group. We need adults to sign up to take safe-house posts (and an indication of your availability if it's limited - nothing beyond putting up the post will be required, but interaction would be dandy!), and we need our group of Finale blinkers and teleporters!

If you could also indicate if your characters won't be participating, that'd be great, too.

ETA: Now unlocked, so everyone can reply. And yes, you can sign up for more than one group, in case the RNG gods decide to smite you.

ETA II IN WHICH I PROVE I CAN READ: Sorry for the confusion. The Home Guard group is not just adults. We need townies and teachers to open "safe house" posts, but we also need students to open common rooms. So, feel free to have your students sign up there too.
